College Football: So Tech is up to 14th in the AP. 16th in the Coaches Poll. Yip-pee. They destroyed Carolina 35-10. Woo-hoo. You may notice my complete lack of enthusiasm. They've hammered two clearly inferior opponents, with two more coming to the 'burg. After they beat Georgia Tech, I'll be more enthusiastic, I swear. After they win big against Clemson and at BC on consecutive Thursday nights and are still undefeated, I'll be downright excited. After they beat Miami, I'll be jubilant. And after they hammer Virginia (who beat Wyoming, but let the Cowboys take it to overtime last week) in the 'burg, I'll be ecstatic. But until the game against the Jackets, I'm not interested. And after they beat Florida State to go to the Orange Bowl (barring an upset - or five - Tech ain't going to Glendale), I'll be rapturous.
In other news, Notre Dame hammered Penn State. If they beat Michigan this week, they'll likely go into the Southern Cal game undefeated. Southern Cal makes it if they beat Nebraska (on broadcast TV, in prime time, nationally, no less) this week and Oregon later. Ohio State, after hammering Texas, likely goes into the Michigan game undefeated if they beat Iowa next month. So who's left? The SEC has some hellacious matchups - Auburn hosts LSU and Tennessee hosts Florida. The winners become the favourites to win their divisions & are catapulted into the national title race, but they have to run the SEC gauntlet. And the division winners get each other in December.
