31-28: The story of missed opportunities, turnovers, and a redshirt freshman QB who, while very talented, has much to learn

The Zuerst pretty much sums up the game, from this Hokie's perspective. Miami lost. Florida State got hammered. Tech had a chance to move up to, at worst, fourth, and had they won on the road against a very good Pitt team, they may well have jumped Ohio State. Now, we'll never know; Tech had several missed opportunities and turnovers. KJ's fumble, deep in Pitt territory in the first half. Marcus' pick toward the end of the first half. The incompletion on fourth-and-4 with about 4 minutes left in the game, which gave Pitt a huge emotional boost. Tech, more or less, contained Larry Fitzgerald (until the last drive). And Kevin Jones set a Tech single game record, running for something like 230 yards.

But it wasn't enough.

And now Tech finds itself fourth in the conference, and, for the Hokies to win the conference, roughly a jillion things have to happen.

In other words, it ain't gonna happen, and Tech may well go bowling in Charlotte. Or San Francisco. But, at this point, the best that the Hokies can hope for is the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.

Pfffffffttttttttt. This is progress, though, I guess. Last year and this year, I've been disappointed when Tech didn't win the national title. That, I suppose, is the first step toward winning said title. Now that Tech ain't gonna win it, I'm disappointed like hell. I just hope they learn from it.

Will write more later.
